How Do I... Pull Hair Sample for DNA Testing?
Click here to order a DNA kit for breeding horses
that are already registered with the AHA.
- Pull, do not cut, hair sample from the mane. Hair roots must be included in the sample.
Do not cut the hair. Cut hair samples do not provide the DNA material required for testing.
- Pull approximately 25 to 50 hairs from the horse's mane by wrapping the hair around your finger
or a clean mane comb. Grasp hair close to the body and pull quickly and evenly so that the hair
does not break and you get the roots. Pulling this small amount of hair will not leave a hole
in the mane and will not hurt the horse
- Straighten the hairs and lay them flat on the sample section in the middle of this form.
The roots should be on the left as indicated. Tape the center of the hair sample to the
form with clear tape so that the hairs stay in place.
- Fold the taped hair sample into the DNA testing form as you would a letter and insert
in the enclosed, pre-addressed envelope. Mail the sample with first-class postage. Do not
send the sample to the Association. If you are testing more than one horse, place each
horse's hair sample in an individual envelope.
After the lab receives the sample, a DNA type will be reported to the Association.
You will not receive notification upon completion of the test. However, the Association will
contact you if there are any problems.
