AHASM Annual Convention
NOMINATIONS / ELECTIONS
Executive Committee Candidates – Elected by Convention Delegates
ARABIAN HORSE ASSOCIATION
NOMINATING COMMITTEE
2003 REPORT
The 2003 AHA Nominating Committee consisted of Joseph W. Hull (Chair), Diana L. Bein,
Cynthia A. Clinton, Van P. Jacobsen, Paul C. Kostial, William W. Pennington.
It is the duty of the Nominating Committee to prepare and place in nomination for
election at the Annual Convention a slate of nominees. In order to assemble a list of
prospective candidates, the Nominating Committee went to great lengths in soliciting
input from the members of AHA. Each member of the Board of Directors was contacted in
order to obtain their views on potential nominees, including the Board Member’s
perspective on the current Executive Committee. Further, the Nominating Committee sent
letters to each chair of the Commissions, Committees and Boards of AHA soliciting their
input and suggestions. Suggestions were further sought from the general membership of AHA
by way of the AHA magazine, the AHA website and by broadcast email.
The Nominating Committee carefully reviewed all of the information received in order to
begin to assemble a slate that could best represent the views, interests and goals of the
Arabian Horse Association. One of the factors considered by the Committee was the nominee’s
qualifications to deal with what the Committee perceived to be vital issues to be confronted
by the Executive Committee in the coming year, such as the implementation of the merger
process, the completion of the Governance Study, the Sport Horse Nationals, the expansion of
the promotional programs, and other critical issues facing this organization.
The Nominating Committee contacted a number of individuals to inquire as to their desire
to be interviewed for consideration for a position on the Executive Committee. Although some
of those individuals declined to be considered, the Committee interviewed a number of
prospective candidates to fill the positions of Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.
It was the consensus of the Committee that the one individual most qualified for each
position be put forth for nomination. The Committee seriously considered all potential
candidates as initially being on an equal footing to serve as an officer, with no preconceived
preferences for any individual or individuals. Each interview was conducted on the basis that
the interviewee was a possible candidate to lead this organization. The Committee took into
consideration that the upcoming year posed a potential for changes in procedures and organization,
which would be an even greater challenge to a new member of the Executive Committee.
The Nominating Committee was also cognizant of the perception that it might merely “rubber stamp”
the current positions on the existing Executive Committee, without giving due consideration to
other potential candidates. This did not occur. Change, merely for the purpose of change, is no more
a legitimate aim than is the retention of the status quo merely for its own sake. The best interests
of the Arabian Horse Association was first and foremost in the minds of the Nominating Committee. The
most qualified candidate was the only goal to be achieved.
In consideration of the foregoing, the Nominating Committee hereby unanimously submits the following
nominees for office for consideration at the 2003 AHA Convention:
Vice President: Gary Dearth
Treasurer: Alan Sankpill
Secretary: Jan Decker
