Sport Horse Nationals
Meet the Volunteers
September 24, 2009
Tom Nelson
As Sport Horse Nationals makes its way through the week to the halfway mark, exhibitors and staff reflect on past shows. This is the seventh year of an up-and-coming National Championship show. Without the hordes of volunteers that step forward to donate their time, the show would certainly not be possible.
Some have been here right from the get-go. One such person is Tom Nelson the official Paddock Manager and Barn Announcer for the Hunter/Jumper Ring. This year Tom is managing the paddock for the newly completed indoor coliseum arena at the Kentucky Horse Park. It is quite impressive with its bright, open feel and shock-absorbing, dust free footing.
Referred to volunteer at the show by Ed Petersen, Tom accepted willingly. His favorite part? Tom says it's "interacting with the exhibitors, other volunteers, and seeing so many great horses!" He says that the showcasing of the particular Sport Horse events is what really made this show stand out. It impressed him enough that he says he has been around "Since the first one!"
Tom also travels with wife and fellow volunteer Pat, a scorer for the Sport Horse ring, to both U.S. Nationals, Youth Nationals and Region XV in addition to Sport Horse. We thank him for his long term dedication to horses and exhibitors he's here for every day.
