Pleasure Carriage Driving A Fun Event for Spectators and Drivers

Pleasure Carriage Driving was added to the Sport Horse Nationals in 2005 and was, again, a popular offering this year as 10 or 11 entries competed in all three classes: working, reinsmanship and obstacles. Despite the wind which blew off a few hats, the carriages made a pretty picture against the sun and the backdrop of the hills in the distance.

Reinsmanship judges a driver's effective use of the aids used in driving which are the hands, whip and voice. It awards the driver who handles his or her horse in the most effective manner for each situation. It is judged 75 percent on the driver and 25 percent on the overall performance.

Champion: Navaho X driven by Nicki McGinnis, owned by Christine or Catherine Lee, Riverside, CA

Reserve: Modern Magic driven by Michelle Mahoney and owned by Michelle Daily, Santa Cruz, CA

Obstacles judges the driver's ability to maneuver through a course. It's a timed event and in this competition the driver must choose their own course. It evaluated a driver's ability to analyze a course and also minimize the amount of time it takes to complete the course.

Champion: Patagonia X driven and owned by Nancy Harvey, Sierra Madre, CA

Reserve: Navajo X driven by Nicki McGinnis and owned by Christine or Catherine Lee of Riverside, CA

Working judges 75 percent on the horse such as how well the harness fits the horse, how balanced the horse is, the attire of the rider, etc., and 25 percent on the turnout. Every driver must have a hat, gloves, apron and whip in hand.
