Canadian Nationals off to a sensational start

In its 52nd year, the Canadian National Arabian and Half-Arabian Championship Horse Show (Canadian Nationals) kicked off on Monday, August 17. Canadian Nationals sets the stage for the Amateur and Open championship show season each year, but also offers classes for youth competitors. Running through August 22, the show, held in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, affectionately known as "The Royal Red," draws exhibitors from 50 states and Canadian provinces as well as about 12,000 spectators, bringing an estimated $5.6 million (U.S. dollars) to the local economy.

Horse lovers, owners, trainers and spectators get to see and experience top-caliber competition representing a variety of disciplines in 174 classes, including English, western and hunter pleasure, show hack, pleasure driving, dressage, working hunter, jumper, trail, reining, working cow, park, sidesaddle, in hand and native costume.

On Monday's roster, 10 of the 17 classes offered had Canadian riders or owners finish in the Top 10 for the class or qualifiers.

In addition to horse show competition held in amateur, youth and open divisions, there is a commercial trade show with commercial exhibits and equestrian-related booths that is free to the public. Daily shopping provides a plethora of vendors selling items such as tack, equestrian gifts, clothing and jewelry. Also this year, daily entertainment will be featured in the commercial trade show area, including a buffet, Internet café and a stage with local talent performing. Monday kicked off the exciting lineup with baton twirlers of Sundown Optimist Buffalo Gals.

This year's event promises even more local support and a more spectator-friendly environment with free admission to all sessions.

Stay tuned this week for Daily Updates, which will share stories of Arabian horse enthusiasts from across the continent as well as provide a peak at contenders from the ringside and around the grounds.
