Canadian Nationals
Meet the Volunteers
August 21, 2009
Sandra Gilbert-Stockhausen
About 9 years ago, Canadian Nationals Show Commission Chair Gerald McDonald recruited barn-mate Sandra Gilbert-Stockhausen to volunteer for the "Royal Red". Since then, Gilbert-Stockhausen has volunteered in various roles for the show. She has worked the patron's lounge, awards room (most of the time) and most recently scribes for trail, reining and dressage.
"Working the awards room is satisfying," Gilbert-Stockhausen says. "People are so appreciative when they come to pick up their awards."
Gilbert-Stockhausen of Ladysmith, British Columbia, has ridden classical dressage since about 1990 and was first exposed to the great Arabian breed in 1986. She has earned several regional awards in Region 17, competing in dressage. "I enjoy dressage because I am always striving to get a bit better," she says.
Agreeing with other Royal Red volunteers, Gilbert-Stockhausen looks forward to the horse-show family reunion each year and requests a week off from her normal job working in an x-ray department. She does that so she can be a part of the Royal Red team and enjoy "the high-quality, beautiful Arabians" each year. She also looks forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting new people. After all, she said the volunteers in Regina are a devoted bunch.
Outside of riding dressage and volunteering at Canadian Nationals, Gilbert-Stockhausen has spent some of her free time belly dancing. She shared a comical time when she developed a native costume-designed from one of her belly-dancing outfits-to ride around locally with her horse.
