Canadian Nationals

Meet the Volunteers

August 19, 2009

Kathy Butkovic

Kathy Butkovic

Kathy Butkovic of Alberta, Canada, essentially grew up in the Canadian Nationals show office. She has been helping out for about 15 years-long enough to see some of the exhibitors go from grooms to assistant trainer to winning their first National Champion as a trainer. "I guess they've seen me grow up as well, starting out in cutting and pasting jobs, which comes by honestly because Marion Enders actually taught me pre-school in Alberta!"

Butkovic has enjoyed her years volunteering at the "Royal Red". A time when the show office was a revolving mascot door known as the "Chicken Era" is one of the most fun times for her. She also loved working with Tim Moerbe from AHA before his retirement. "He was great fun!" The people she sees and reconnects with every year help make Canadian Nationals a fun event for her.

"I like seeing the exhibitors and other volunteers every year," Butkovic says. "In general, I love the laid-back atmosphere of Canadian Nationals. It's known for being a really fun, more relaxed, National show. I like how the people of the City of Regina support the show annually with events and turnout. The Royal Red Host Committee is great!"

When Butkovic is not helping in the show office or heading to the ring to watch her favorite Arabians compete, she works as an Equine Sports Therapist and owns EquiSportsTherapy.com. She spends the show/race season traveling with her two dogs and working with high-end competition horses of various breeds and disciplines. "Most people know me from Arabian events, but this year I've had equine clients win the $100,000 Barrel Racing at the Calgary Stampede, Thoroughbreds win at major race tracks, as well as Quarter Horse reiners and cutters, etc."
